eClinical Works and Meaningful Use

The latest version of eCW, both web based and server based, are CCHIT certified Meaningful Use.

  • Is that all it takes to prove Meaningful Use?
  • Do I now get to collect my first reimbursement check?
  • Isn’t that all I need to do?

NO.

Sorry to ruin your garden party.

Meaningful use is not nearly that straight forward…unfortunately.

You didn’t think the government would make it easy to get your reimbursement money…did you?

Big picture, here is what you need to do to prove you are a meaningful user:

  1. Use a CCHIT Meaningful Use certified EHR
  2. Select your 5 “Menu Set Objectives“,
  3. Ensure your work flows gather the requirements for the 15 “Core Objectives“,
  4. Track these items for 90 days (year 1) to prove yourself a meaningful user,
  5. Fill out all the paperwork online,
  6. Collect check #1.

If you are on the latest version of eClinicalWorks (9 and above), whether the web based (SAAS) version or the server based version, you are covered for #1 as both of these are Meaningful Use certified.

The 5 Menu Set Objectives are something you’ll need to process through yourself, but why not choose the easiest of those?
Let’s see, the easiest might be:

  1. Capability to submit syndromic surveillance data to public health agencies – built into eCW?
    • Perform at least once
  2. Capability to submit immunization information – built into eCW?
    • Perform at least once
  3. Perform medication reconciliation
    • Perform on at least 50% of patients referred to office
  4. Identify patient specific education resources – part of the patient portal
    • More than 10%
  5. Provide patients with timely electronic access to health information – part of patient portal
    • More than 10%

So, look at those 5.  They should be automatic.  You just set it and forget it.

    What else?

Well, you need to tackle the 15 Core Objectives.
